„How can we help each other?“ This was one of the initial questions discussed on 15 March 2016, as part of the information and dialogue event „Active and intelligent packaging – safeguarding recycling cycles“ in the Federal Environmental Agency‘s premises in Dessau.

The functionality requirements of packagings are continuously increasing. More and more new packaging solutions are being developed. Active barrier layers protect the product, smart labels are intended to indicate the freshness of products, RFID tags are used as anti-theft protection and information carriers. Until now little is known about the recyclability of active and intelligent packaging and its effect on existing recycling cycles. The event therefore focused on informing the players involved in the life cycle of packaging and, together with them, on working up central points of reference and possible courses of action for safeguarding recycling cycles.

As a result of the information and workshop elements, which built upon each other, the participants identified focal actions and at the same time defined the specific opportunities, risks, possible obstacles and specific implementation options.

The project results will be presented at a meeting of experts on 26 October 2016 in the Federal Press Office in Berlin.
