Estimating and forecasting heating energy requirement - requirements calculator for apartments

Energy calculator: Total consumption and consumption per square metre

Derived from the already established short method for the simple energy assessment of buildings of the German Institute of Housing and the Environment (Institut für Wohnen und Umwelt - IWU), the apartment-specific requirements calculator determines the relevant influencing factors for heating energy consumption and forecasts a total consumption and a consumption per square metre. However, in order to make the apartment-specific requirements calculator accessible to the broadest possible user base, importance was attached to not asking for too detailed information. In addition to the building age class and information about whether the building has been renovated since 1995, the calculator incorporates basic data on the apartment itself in the calculation. This includes the floor area of the apartment, room height, storey (basement, ground floor, middle storey, attic conversion), the number of rooms and the number of external walls.

Requirements calculator for landlords, tenants and housing associations

The intention is to make the new requirements calculator available for online use free-of-charge. In this way it is possible for different user groups, whether landlords, tenants or housing associations, to compare the total consumption or consumption per square metre with the requirement after renovation. For tenants this is interesting if the issue is whether their consumption is below or above-average compared to their requirement in their current apartment and whether it would pay to move into a renovated or new apartment. The calculator is also interesting for landlords and housing associations, in order to forecast consumption after renovation and thus to possibly commission economic feasibility calculations.
