Mobility and tourism under the banner of climate change

On 21 July 2015, the most important results of the study and practical ideas for towns, cities and regions will be presented to the public for the first time in Gmund on Tegernsee and will be made available in guidelines.

Climate protection and adapting to climate change are two of society's biggest challenges. Among other things, two closely knit areas are affected: the leisure and tourism industry and the transport sector. The study shows for both industries that climate change not only brings risks (e.g. increase in hot days) but also opportunities (e.g. new offers). However, until now significantly more attention has been paid to the risks than to the opportunities. As climate change has a very different effect regionally too, the adaptation measures must differentiate, especially between urban and rural areas.

Project steps

The project consisted of many steps: As part of a status-quo analysis, the focus was initially on how the two regions are affected by the consequences of climate change. Step 2 involved expert interviews, in order to estimate the opportunities and risks of climate change. In the subsequent workshop phase adaptation measures were worked up and evaluated. Outline projects were worked up for these so-called "beacon ideas", which were then assessed economically and ecologically in the final project step.

Beacon ideas for the Tegernsee Valley

Two beacon ideas for the Tegernsee Valley were developed further straight away: In the offer feed "Always a suitable idea" ("Immer eine passende Idee") up-to-date daily tourist offers are to be brought together digitally. The platform should serve to show offers for every opportunity, all weathers, all ages and all interests and provide information on the most climate-neutral travel possible to and from the location. The mobility project "Fahr M.i.T." (= Mobil im Tal - mobile in the valley) forms the second beacon idea. The objective is to close the first and last link of a mobility chain to the destination or from the house door to a bus or train stop.

Beacon idea for the City of Nuremberg

The City of Nuremberg focussed on more activities in the countryside and with the bicycle. This project included working up the beacon idea "Bergstraße 2030" (mountain road 2030); it can be used by residents and tourists and is intended as a green, cool path through the old city.

Adaptation to climate change is an area which is still very young compared to climate protection. Beacon projects with a signal effect start here and service as stimulus for individuals to become active and creative. The development of the beacon ideas in the project was an innovative process in which, over two years, despite different points of view and interests, ways were found to prepare for the future together.

In the climate adaptation brochure ("Leuchtturm Klimaanpassung. Mobilität und Tourismus in Zeiten des Klimawandels in der Stadt Nürnberg und im Tegernseer Tal" - pdf.) you will find further information on the project.
