DAS: Concept for adaptation to climate change for companies in the timber construction industry

Climate change has arrived in Germany and with it an observable accumulation of heat waves in summer. Results of the research project "Adaptation to climate change for companies in the timber construction industry" (funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection).

Hotter summers, milder winters, more frequent heavy rainfall and storms - the consequences of climate change are increasingly being felt by craft businesses, whether in terms of work processes, the availability of raw materials or the protection of employees. For example, the increase in heat days and rising air temperatures are affecting the performance of employees on construction sites as well as in workshops. In addition, rising ozone concentrations and increased UV radiation can lead to serious health risks, such as cardiovascular problems or an increased risk of skin cancer.

As part of the research project "Adaptation to Climate Change for Companies in the Timber Construction Industry" (KA-Hoba) funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, a systematic examination of the consequences of climate change and how to cope with them for the various trades in the timber construction industry took place in close cooperation with Taglieber Holzbau GmbH from Oettingen. The focus was on products, the workforce, customers and suppliers. Measures and concepts were developed to strengthen the company's ability to resist and adapt to the consequences of climate change and to integrate them into its business processes.

The project results include a transferable climate adaptation concept with action profiles and information materials on health protection. They provide impulses and assistance on how the timber construction industry can integrate aspects of climate change and extreme weather into climate-sensitive areas of action within the company and promote the climate adaptation competence of all stakeholders concerned. The overarching, theoretically based concept for adaptation to climate change can not only support timber construction companies in climate adaptation, but in principle also provide impetus and solutions for all other sectors of the construction industry.
